John Brogan Ellis and Alexis Litsch
June 1 – June 23, 2024

John Brogan Ellis
“My work explores different methods of abstraction through the repetition of lines and circles. I stretch the limits of repetitive mark making by playing with the balance of micro/ macro, conducting the rhythm of layered shapes, and integrating natural components to emphasize organic texture.
My process is involved and physical, I start big and work small. I am never beholden to my initial idea for a piece and instead rely on an intuitive process that begins with the creation of simple, organic shapes and activation through the repetition of lines, dashes, and circles.
Often, I find my way and successfully “activate” the composition. Sometimes I do not and instead cover the piece in flat paint and start over. I do this because it can be easier to begin a painting when you’re familiar, when there’s both an established personal significance and lowered stakes in the sense that I know I can always start over.”
